Ruidoso Fire

Evacuations Ordered as Wildfires Converge on New Mexico Village

Thousands of residents flee as flames approach Ruidoso

Immediate evacuation notice issued due to imminent danger

Residents of the New Mexico village of Ruidoso were ordered to immediately flee Monday evening as a rapidly spreading wildfire approached the community. The South Fork Fire has already burned through thousands of acres of vegetation and is threatening homes and businesses in the alpine resort town. Officials say the fire is moving quickly and residents need to leave immediately.

The Ruidoso Office of Emergency Management issued an immediate evacuation notice for the entire village, affecting approximately 7,700 people. Residents have been told to leave without stopping to gather belongings. The evacuation order includes the following areas:

  • The entire village of Ruidoso
  • All areas north of Gavilan Canyon Road
  • All areas west of Eagle Creek Road
  • All areas south of Highway 70
  • All areas east of White Mountain Drive

Residents are advised to evacuate to the nearest evacuation center, which is located at the Ruidoso Convention Center. They should bring their pets and any important medications or documents with them.

The South Fork Fire is one of several large wildfires burning in New Mexico. The state is currently experiencing severe drought conditions, which are fueling the growth and intensity of the fires. Firefighters are working around the clock to contain the blazes, but they are facing difficult conditions and limited resources.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the area around Ruidoso, indicating that conditions are ripe for wildfires. The warning is in effect until 11 p.m. Monday night.
